which was surprising knowing that people like john mccain would be tough. this could not be a surprise to him. i thought it was a shocking performance. >>chris: and then he had to deal with past remarks such as the 2006 comment that the "jewish lobby" had intimidated people on capitol hill to do "dumb things" which led to this exchange with senator graham. >> give me an example of where we have been intimidated by the israeli and jewish lobby to do something "dumb." regarding the middle east or israel or anyone else. >> i cannot. >>chris: that raises the question, why does president obama want hagel in the pentagon in the first place? >> here is the thing. the stumbling is what we are focusing on, but at look at his worldview, it is the president's worldview we are seeing and the containment exchange was front and center in this. that means we are going to allow possibly a nuclear iran and contain it. we will not prevent it. people are skeptical about whether the white house is going to use, or keep the military option on the table to prevent a nuclear iran. this goes to the question o

didn't exactly treat him with kid gloves. listen to this exchange with senator john mccain. >> will you answer the question, please. were you correct or incorrect when you said that the surge blunder in thist dangerous country since vietnam. correct or incorrect? yes-or-no answer. >> my reference to --. >> are can you answer the question? the question is, were you right or wrong? that is a straightforward question. i would like to have an answer. >> i am not going do give you a yes-or-no answer. >> he refused to answer the question for the record. >>gregg: john mccain may have missed his calling, he should have been a lawyer. so, how many republicans will vote for their former colleague. we have john leboutillier, former republican congressman, for new york. pat caddell, former pollster for president carter and doug schoen former pollster for bill clinton i googled worst confirmation hearing ever and up popped chuck hagel. i thought it would be john tower or bork. hagel got the worse. >> here is what happened. bottom line, chug hagel demonstrated why i believe he is not qualified to be

in the middle of his term. remember, he tried, as did a lot of democrats and john mccain to get immigration reform through in 2007. and that's when the backlash grew. and then when the bush administration was deemed a failure, which many of us believed broadly that it was, a lot of conservatives said that's true. and instead of trying to moderate the party then, they said the problem was this compassionate conservative guy was too liberal. so they pulled the party way over to the right. the problem they have now is the tea party folks are the folks who kind of got them there in 2010. and it's as if the republicans are saying well, we needed your votes to drive this car to the country club, but we really don't want to let you inside the country club. so they're courting a kind of class warfare in the republican party over the next couple of years. >> e.j., one of the things i think you have written about more eloquently than anybody else is the idea of -- you've written ambitiously i should say about the idea of civility, that we can have reasonable disagreements about even very profound dif

it was personal. john mccain was the author of the surge of troops to iraq at the end of the administration, pushed it hard, took a lot of heat, including from the right. he takes it personal when chuck hagel calls it the bigst debacle since vietnam. and senator hagel dodging the question on whether he agreed with the same statement. hag mccain was getting testy and hagel was dodging. it was one of the key military decisions in the past ten years, and if senator hagel is the top military adviser to the president, they want to explore his thinking on that. and politics, trying to portray senator hagel as anti israel plays well to some interest groups, and that's much more politics. >> to pull from a football term given the weekend, it seems like he was fumbling around. was he not as well prepared as he ought to have been? >> no doubt, senators walked out of the hearing shaking their head, from both sides, democrats and republicans were very surprised how poorly prepared senator hagel appeared to be. for expected -- like senator mccain's questions about the surge. that's just a fundamental qu

and kind of a boondoggle in a lot of ways. john mccain has said that there's been real improvements in border security. and asked if it helps the politics of reform. he says, i think it helps a lot. he argues the situation has improved and calls the concern overhyped. and so one thing is there's a political idea here, which is this is the necessary precondition to get reform. my question to you is what is our ideal border look like? if what we're doing now is the wrong thing, what should it look like? his friend and republican colleague john mccain. was there something personal there? >> there is always something personal in relationships between senators and chuck hagel is a former senator. i can't speculate on motives of each of the senators. they are probably different motives, an array of intent and purpose. i think there will be a vote this week in the committee, if not this week, next week, but soon. i believe there will be republican votes for senator hagel and if not in committee, at least on the floor. i believe he will be approved. i think the personal issues, hopefully, will be put behind us. most importantly, it will be a bipartisan vote. whatever the motives on a personal level, i hope partisanship is not part of this process as the american people watching that hearing may have concluded it was because the weight of the republican questioning, the prosecuting or crass examination aspect was so much on the republican side. >> do you agree with the old tradition that president's should be able to pick their own cabinet, choose the people with whom they
